Enthusiasm in learning is excitement with inspiration, motivation, and a pinch of creativity. -- Bo Bennett
This is our class motto. My job is not to just academically educate them but to create and develop the total child who loves to learn.
My students live in an increasingly economically challenged section of our city.
They face many hardships daily. Many come from homes where they lack the proper materials to get by. Many also come from broken homes. All the surrounding schools in our area receive Title 1 (government funding) excepts ours. We have the same issues as the other schools but don't receive extra money for resources. Their school is a safe haven for them. There, they can get their basic needs met, plus an education. Teachers here mentors and parents and the students thrive on that.
Luckily part of our school was rebuilt a last year, so 2nd grade students have the luxury of a new building. However, the school severely lacks current technology and the basic classroom supplies. I have a globe in my room that still has U.S.S.R Our students are smart, ambitious and full of character and could use a helping hand to bring them into our ever-changing technological world and culturally diverse world.
My Project
My students are so creatively talented and they like to express themselves through video and pictures. We love to create slide shows and use photo essays to express ourselves in writing. This camera will give me the capability to take photos as well as video record for numerous projects that my 2nd grade team likes to do when teaching character ed and social studies.
I have an old globe that still shows U.S.S.R on it and has puncture wounds throughout various continents. I inherited it from a retired teacher. It is difficult for my students to understand and relate what I teach them in geography using this globe. The budget is so tight in our district that there is no extra money to purchase maps.
These timers will allow my students to monitor their fluency as they strive to become stronger and better readers. Learning to read is a complex task and allowing them to see their fluency increase will help build their self esteem.
Please support this project as I continue to inspire and educate our future.
Having these items in our class will help me incorporate new and innovative ways of teaching and reach all my students through their varied learning styles.
