Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a diverse kindergarten classroom. As a brand new charter school, my students hail from a number of different backgrounds and speak countless foreign languages. One day, I incorporated a music activity into one of my lessons, and to my amazement, even the most behaviorally challenged students took to the activity with excitement.
I've seen the power of music in an education environment, and witnessed music seeing no boundaries. Each of my students has the ability to learn through music.This is my reason for wishing to bring more hands on music activities to their classroom. I want them to have the chance to learn by interacting with each other and listening to each other. My school does not have the funding to bring what I need to accomplish what I know my students can learn from. I want to offer hands-on, minds-on learning opportunities for these young students.
What we really need are sing-along music albums and children's cd's that focus on following directions. Things like learning the days of the week, months of the year, or even how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, would allow the children to learn key components of the curriculum in a fun and interactive way. Not only will this expose them to the arts, but will assist with remediation and extension as you help bring our kindergarten curriculum to life.
