See what Ms. Gilmore is requestingMy students need flexible seating. I requested 4 active kids chairs for students, 4 textured seats to work at a lowered table, and 4 chair bands to move their feet throughout the day!

My school serves approximately 820 students. My students are special because they are starting their first year of school and they are beginning their lifelong journey as readers, writers, and mathematicians.
My school is unique because it is so diverse!
Demographics are as follows: Caucasian 36%, African-American 32%, Hispanic 23%, Asian 6%, American Indian .6% other 2.4%. The LEP students have risen from 44-77 in just two years. Our needs continue to grow every year. However, I love my school because it is racially, ethnically, or economically diverse, more so than any other school in which I've taught. My school provides a wonderful opportunity to serve as a model for our district for how successful diverse schools can be.
With all that being said, I want to ensure my students academic, social, and emotional needs are met. With the help of a few more resources, I know that my kiddos will continue to mold a positive model for diverse schools in urban education.
I am requesting flexible chairs and textured seats for my students to sit on throughout the day. I also would like stretchy bands that can be attached to student chairs. These bands will allow students to move their legs while working. Flexible seating would provide seating choice for my students. This year my focus will be on differentiation. My school is so diverse and this is a wonderful thing! One of the positives is that we get to meet the students where they are academically, socially, and emotionally, and teach them from there!
I am confident that the flexible seating will provide increased student engagement, ownership, academic growth, and overall positive health.
I know flexible seating will positively impact their academic success because it will enable them to choose a mode that best suits their learning modality. I noticed this past year many of my students wanted to stand and complete their work instead of sitting. When I gave them more choice, such as laying on the floor or working at another table, students were happier and worked a little more diligently because of it. I also observed a few classrooms at other schools that have implemented this practice and have seen great growth in student productivity and overall academic growth of students. I believe that the choice will allow students to take more ownership of their academic progress and work. The flexible seating will also enable me to spread children around the classroom to work more independently and help me better differentiate their academic tasks.
Lastly, children need movement. Research says that movement strengthens connections in your brain. In addition, flexible seating can help burn calories and strengthen the core muscles. Young children especially need more movement throughout the day. Flexible seating will positively impact my students!
