Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We start every day by analyzing a motivational quote.
By the end of the year, I want my students to know that words and literature can help them learn and have a personal positive impact on their lives.
"Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later." - Og Mandino
Many of my students come from low-income, high-risk backgrounds.
I have students who are in foster homes, who have parents in prison, who are or have been homeless, who have had encounters with the legal system, who will be first generation graduates, and who have big dreams. There is a population of Native American students who don't relate to the cultural content of many of the books which are available. The goal is to reach these students with culturally relevant materials and for the other students in class with them to build their knowledge base, cultural awareness, and empathy.
My Project
8th Grade ELA must teach to five sets of standards. I use literature to teach each of these standards (I use informational text which supplements literature by giving historical context to meet that standard as well as to connect with Social Studies for cross-curricular learning). When my class studies a book, we read it together as a class. This is vital for students to get modeling of what good, fluent reading sounds like. It also provides scaffolding for struggling readers, and gives us the opportunity to stop and discuss the book when elaboration and analysis is needed to improve both comprehension and independent thinking about the book. For this reason, it's important for each student to have a book in their hand to be able to follow along and to look at text evidence during class discussions and the lessons that follow. Books like Touching Spirit Bear do more than just allow me to teach the standards; they build relationships, empathy, and a love for learning and reading. We need 35 copies of this book.
This project will allow students who have previously felt disconnected from the learning materials to engage in a new and meaningful way.
All lessons will be connected and aligned to common core standards and will be designed by this classroom teacher so they meet the individual learning needs of students being targeted in the best and most meaningful way possible.
