Have you ever struggled with learning to read? Are you learning to read in another language? In order to support my diverse group of students in their reading acquisition, I would like to provide them with the opportunity to listen to the English language through quality audio literature.
We are a rapidly changing diverse school with an increasing number of second language learners.
Many of my students are learning to speak English with no language support from home, as many of their parents speak only limited English. The school population is 43% low income, so many families do not have reading materials or the ability to support additional reading instruction at home. I want to provide my students with as much exposure to literature as possible to support their language needs.
My Project
A listening center along with quality literature will support my students in the acquisition of English as they listen to stories and practice their reading. The ability to listen to a novel many times will support their language development and reading comprehension skills. It will also allow the students to hear fluent readers that model good expression, intonation and proper pacing.
All 33 students in my 4th grade classroom will benefit from these quality audio reading experiences now and in years to come.
An investment in students now will have a long-term impact on their language learning and reading fluency through the grades. These materials will allow me to differentiate reading experiences for my students to support their achievement.
