This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from low-income families that are of Hispanic and African-American descent. A majority of my students speak two languages and struggle with the transitions between the languages. Some students cannot afford basic school supplies, get a good night's sleep, or concentrate on their educational success due to home issues that some adults never have to think about. My students need stability and consistency daily, and I try to provide this with a daily routine.
It is my job to provide a safe and effective environment for a successful academic future.
I focus on the needs of each of my students through small groups and one-on-one work. It is my goal to keep students engaged and focused while in small groups. I have to be very creative with this due to our school's limited funding for extra materials. These materials would help my students stay focused and productive during their center time.
My Project
My students returned this school year with very few supplies. I am one lucky teacher to be able to have a class set of Chromebooks, but we need headphones to be able to keep our learning independent and meaningful.
Each student needs a pair of headphones so they can listen to stories online being read to them and listen to lessons specifically taught to their individual needs.
This learning should be something that is private and no other student should know what level the other is on. This could be embarrassing for some students who struggle. I want to make sure each of my students is receiving all the individualized attention that they need to become the best version of themselves. Some students have difficulty concentrating on other sounds around them, so the headphones would provide the focus that each student so desperately needs.
The class timer would give each student the ability to manage their own time without constant interruption from me about how much time is left for each center or activity. My students are at a critical age where they need to start taking more responsibility for their learning and managing their time. I feel a simple thing like a class timer would make a huge impact on my current and future classes.
