I am the intervention specialist in a second grade full inclusion classroom. Not only do I co-teach in the classroom, I also manage the IEPs and goals of the 9 students with disabilities. In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students. More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. Even with these barriers, this does not stop my amazing students from coming to school eager and anxious to learn and be the best they can be!
My students' disabilities range from mild to intensive, so I strive to make sure all of my students learn, no matter their ability level, in this setting.
There is a lot of differentiated teaching and learning going on throughout the day to make sure I am meeting the needs of all of the students. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn. My goal is to set them up to be independent, contributing members to society in the future!
My Project
Each year we have our students on Chromebooks finding research to write biographies on a person of their choice. During this process, our students often have difficulty reading the articles to themselves and they rely on the Read & Write App for Google Chrome to read it to them.
This project would give each of our students a pair of working headphones to listen to articles read aloud to them while learning about the person they are researching.
Once the research is completed and our students have completed a rough draft, they are expected to type their biographies. The highlighters would greatly benefit our students' ability to track what they are typing sentence by sentence. Additionally, the students would love to use the felt Flair pens to edit their work.
We would find great use for these materials in our classroom. In addition to listening to research, our students could also use the headphones during "listening to reading." We have a program called "Speakaboos" that gives students that have difficulty reading access to stories at their level that can be read aloud to them. I look forward to continuing to have my students research to learn more about important people that have influenced our society.
