Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a special education teacher in a low socioeconomic "Title I" school, all the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. My class consists of 13 students. My kids are faced with many challenges in and outside the classroom. They are academically below grade level. Many come from a single parent home. Although my kids have varying disabilities such as learning disabled, autism, emotional disturbed, and mentally handicapped, they are eager to learn and succeed. I want to provide an atmosphere that is safe, and engaging. Help me engage and inspire my students by becoming a partner in their learning.

My Project

In funding my project you will become a partner in their learning.

There are many advantages to having a listening center in your classroom.

It helps struggling readers build sight word vocabulary, it models phrasing and fluency. It provides exposure to a variety of story structures (genres) and text levels that are above their independent level.

It strengthens their receptive and expressive language skills and foster independence from the teacher while building teamwork. It can compliment/supplement content curriculum by building prior knowledge of an unknown subject while also promoting accountable talk with their group which can be of mixed abilities.

A listening center which consists of a CD/cassette tape player, headsets and a listening center organization bench would be a great addition to my literacy centers.

Our required readers are usually above my student's independent level, giving them the opportunity to listen to this book on tape gives them the ability to stop the tape and restart it at any point within the book. This will increase their comprehension and vocabulary.

Also, my students have varied interests and again many of their subjects of interest are above their reading level so a listening center would give them the exposure to books of interest.

My classroom is also in need of one additional seat sack for my 13 students. Having seat sacks have proven to keep students supplies neat and organized.

My students would greatly benefit from the hear myself sound phone, this is a center activity that amplifies the student's voice so they can pay attention to the sounds which helps with articulation.
