Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are high school students, ages 14-22, in a self-contained special ed. program. We split our math block between whole group instruction and independent practice, focusing on our IEP goals. I hope to help my students learn the basics of math through songs, poems, and hands-on activities.

We are a Title 1 school, so most of our students are living below the poverty line.

In our special education program, our student's abilities vary from simply pointing to answers to reading and decoding words. We teach students who communicate through vocalizations, simple sign language, picture symbols, and verbal communication. Some of the students are more independent than others but all of them are working to become more independent so they can function successfully in the community.

My Project

We are going to use the materials to work on our IEP goals which vary from student to student but include: learning number sense, how to categorize objects, how to add and subtract, and learning about money. All of our work is to help us better function in our community.

We are very limited on the number of math materials in our classroom.

Students with disabilities need their instruction to come in a variety of ways- they don't learn like the average student. By using these materials, we will be able to learn through hands-on activities and use the materials for continued practice over time. These materials will help my students input information both visually and kinesthetically.
