Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We all learn in different ways. Having learning stations would allow us to explore different ways of learning, but we need help obtaining the needed activities. We have very little supplies and old materials. We would like to obtain new appropriate hand on activities for our grade 3-5 class.
My students are in a grade 3-5 classroom.
They are special education students with emotional difficulties. These students have difficulty focusing and engaging on lessons that are primarily paper and pencil. They can only focus for short periods of sit down learning time. My students prefer to move around and often stand up while they do their work. Providing them with a math center with hands-on activities would allow them to focus and motivate them to learn. Whenever they are engaged in activities that require them to use their hands, their focus increases and they enjoy learning. Our school is in a high poverty area and the school system only provides funds for basic supplies. My students need engaging, hands-on activities as a way to motivate and challenge them. My students also need to engage with their peers in order to build relationships that are necessary to their emotional growth.
My Project
Besides helping them increase their math skills,, the items I have chosen will help my students to share and to get along with each other. It will provide them with activities that are age and grade appropriate given the fact that our class encompasses grades 3-5. By providing my students with the tools they need to work and learn together, you will not only help them improve their math skills, but also their social skills, which are very important in order to be successful in building relationships with peers and as well as adults.
My students need math magnetic activity boards,a game to help them learn about consequences, highlighting tape to help them focus on vocabulary, and math activities.
These items will be used to create math centers where my students can learn through touching and playing with activities that will help them engage in math. The game about consequences will help my students learn that they have to make right choices when making decisions.
