My students need interactive ways to engage in subject material in class. Games, including Carcassonne, Risk Games, Settlers of Catan, and others are an excellent medium to learn.

My Students
After riding the subway early in the morning, my students show up at school excited to see their friends but often dreading the school day ahead. They know the importance of passing high school, getting an education, and going to college, but their building is uninviting, their desks are uncomfortable, the hallways are loud, and the curriculum seems irrelevant.
My students inhabit and live in New York City; one of the most exciting and busy places in the world; yet their school day doesn't always reflect that excitement.
My students are curious and ask their teachers questions during class, before school, and during lunch. They play basketball and video games after classes. They love music and movies. My students are special because they look out for one another and persist day after day.
My Project
Games are a great learning tool. In addition to strategy, board games are useful in engaging with geography, history, economic theories, land use, human settlement, and more. My students will use these games in US, Global History, and Economics classes to learn about trade, comparative advantage, ancient civilizations, politics, and war. It is my intention that with these games my students will better understand the concepts and history we are learning in class.
Games help students apply key concepts from class and they also help students learn life skills such as good communication and how to win and lose graciously.
Games allow students to interact with the classroom material and experience ideas first hand. These games will help the concepts we are learning about in class "stick" with the students.
