Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 6th-grade students attend a public elementary school in northern California with a total enrollment of slightly over 500 students. Our school is considered to be a "School-wide Title I" school, with about 90% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches. Many come from immigrant families, and most students have few if any, family members with formal educations beyond high school. My students see and often experience violence in their community, yet they are eager and excited to be in school and have opportunities to learn.

It often seems that my students are judged based solely on their standardized test scores, but I pity those who are unable to look past that single metric to recognize how strong, resilient, and amazing my students are.

While school can be challenging for many of my students due to the external pressures that they experience, they KNOW that they can be successful...they just might need a little more time and a little more support.

My Project

The colored pencils, markers, crayons, scratch paper, and construction paper. will help my students with learning because it enhances their creativity skills. These materials support all subjects being taught in the classroom. Many students are starting to be limited with how many colors they can use because they are running out of art supplies and families aren't able to provide a restock in supplies.

These art supplies will also benefit my students' social/emotional well-being, especially during these challenging times for them and their families.

The requested art items are not only are beneficial for the school setting, but also back at home.
