My students are ages 3-5 years with special needs. We spend our day learning basic skills through play. This involves having a variety of interesting and engaging materials. We use many sensory materials daily, as my students need to focus their bodies for learning.
I teach children with a variety of needs.
We currently have 3 preschool classes on our campus. These classes are called Preschool for All Learners. (PAL) The PAL class ensures all students with special needs receive additional support to gain the developmental skills needed for Kindergarten.
I engage them with interesting and tactile materials that help them gain social, language, motor, cognitive, literacy, and math skills. This requires me to provide multiple resources, manipulatives, and creative play-based learning centers to encourage exploration. My students are amazing and love to learn through play!
My Project
I am fortunate to work with preschoolers that have a variety of special needs. Many of them have Autism and require a variety of sensory materials to help them organize and calm their bodies for learning. The sensory beads, tubs, shapes and play materials will allow opportunities to explore different textures. We use a variety of materials in our sensory tables, so all children can benefit from these tactile experiences. The 2- way water and sand tables will give additional students play time at the tables and encourage social skills with peers. The light table with accessories provides exploration of basic skills, while engaging students in learning basic properties of science. ABC bubbles and picture magnets reinforce literacy skills and increase phonemic awareness.
Active play is critical to my students' learning.
Their little bodies need movement to organize and prepare them for learning. All of these materials allow students to learn through movement. The Back Jack chair provides alternative seating for a child who requires additional support, while still allowing movement. Providing individualized seating gives all children the opportunity to learn together.
Thank you for considering my project and making an impact on my students' learning.
