My students need to have their voices heard. They love reading, but hearing their characters come to life is even more exciting for them! Help them find their voices!
Do you remember when you used to do a "class play?" Wasn't it wonderful to act out a character and have your feelings put right out there on stage? Didn't you love watching your friends try to be just like their favorite characters? Well, I would love to see my students experience the same thing!
I am a teacher of gifted and talented kindergarten students in a lovely neighborhood in New York.
Our school is a neighborhood school where most other children walk to school and are picked up by one non-working parent. I have a class of 22 children from all over our area since they bus in our G&T children. Many of them have working parents and they therefore attend latchkey. Unfortunately, our school was one of local areas hit very hard by Hurricane Sandy. We bounced back as a community and it has been a very proud, but trying time for us.
My Project
Two years ago, my school lost our drama teacher. He was amazing. He brought so much joy to our building and the kids just loved him and the work that he did. Being a theatre person myself, I think that it is very important for children to be able to express themselves through acting. I am hoping to bring in a teaching artist for 10 sessions per class to create dramatic pieces from the literature that they are currently engrossed in. This might include the works of Mo Willems, Eric Carle, Angela Johnson, or Tomie DePaola. This program would allow our children to take the literature that they are working on and create mini-plays that could then be performed for their classmates and possibly even their parents and the whole school! Also, this program is NOT JUST FOR MY CLASS! This residency would include 2 Kindergarten classes and 2 first grade classes -- all in the G&T program. This program will fit beautifully into their enrichment requirements as gifted and talented students.
Our students need an outlet.
With everything that has been going on it is now even more important that they get to express themselves! Seeing our children in "dramatic action" might be just the thing to revitalize the theatre program at our school!
