My Students

Everyone wants to be in a comfortable environment especially when they are reading independently. A cozy reading center with a soft bean bag chair and a good book is a great way to encourage students that reading is for pleasure and not just learning.

We are a title 1 school that is located in a rural setting.

We are surrounded by beautiful apple orchards and farm land. Our school is made up of just under 400 students grades pre-k thru 6th. Each year we are working to improve students reading scores. It seems like all we are doing is moving students in the direction of technology and testing. We need to also encourage our students to pick up a book and read for enjoyment. As a special education teacher I work with students who don't like to read because they struggle with decoding and fluency. By creating a comfortable and relaxing reading corner I hope to encourage students to pick up a book because they want to read. Fifteen minutes each day of reading or listening to a story together will help my students improve their skills.

My Project

In our room we have a corner that we would like to transform into an inviting reading center where students would get to go each day for 15 minutes to read or listen to a story without the struggle of not being able to read. Instead of chairs, the bean bag chairs will offer a comfortable place to sit to read. Each day these students come into my room for extra reading support. It will be fun when the students can come into my room and see an inviting spot for them to read. Come in, sit down, relax and enjoy a story. Learning takes place when you feel welcomed and comfortable. Listening to a story or reading a story that maybe an easy read or a picture book is all part of learning to read. Even having a good discussion about a book is a great way to learn.

These 2 chairs will help create a reading corner that will be allow students a different way to learn.

Students will have a place to read for fun or discuss a story or book and relax. Even though they will feel like they are just reading for fun, they will actually be working to improve their reading skills. Desks, tables, and chairs make them feel like they are in school. This reading corner will have them learning without knowing they are learning. This will create a positive excitement.
