My students need art supplies (5 boxes of colored oil pastels, 2 boxes of white oil pastels, 2 boxes of black oil pastels, 5 boxes of watercolor pencils, and 25 watercolor paint refill strips) to paint and draw pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge as we study New York City history.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fund my class, so we can create amazing pictures of Brooklyn neighborhoods and the Brooklyn Bridge!
About a year ago, my school was written up as one of the most underfunded schools in New York City and with recent budget cuts, art supplies will get more scarce. My school is a title I school, which means that the large majority of our families are considered low-income. We use a dual language approach to teach our kids (mostly Spanish dominant) to be bilingual and bi-literate. Despite being severely underfunded, our school makes the dollars stretch far. The staff, the students, and their families are incredibly hard-working and dedicated, so much so, that our school received an A rating from New York City 2 years in a row.
The majority of the students in my class are English Language Learners. Two huge challenges that I face in my classroom are making Social Studies interesting and engaging and helping students to acquire language.
In my experience as a teacher over the past 5 years, art projects, when combined with the right teaching, really ensures that my students quickly learn new and sophisticated vocabulary while getting excited about social studies and picking up new concepts and material efficiently and easily. I am hoping that you will help me to supply my students with some simple, but exciting art supplies, such as oil pastels, water colors, and water color pencils to help me to continue to teach social studies through art.
We will use these art supplies for a variety of social studies projects, including drawing pictures of buildings and landscapes in the neighborhood and drawing pictures of and from the Brooklyn Bridge. Of course, this art work will be accompanied by lots of reading and studying of social and historical trends, etc. This kind of drawing pulls students' attention to the details of the structures and landscapes they are drawing and helps them to learn related vocabulary as they talk and write about their pictures.
By bringing these art supplies to our classroom, you will make it possible to inspire my students to understand the world around them, so that they can become more educated adults with a stronger sense of civic awareness and responsibility.
