My Students
I teach a linguistically and culturally diverse student population with unique backgrounds, talents, and interests. They truly are an amazing set of learners!
These future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, writers, and explorers need tools to enhance their social and emotional skills.
They work in small groups or in partners on interactive, hands-on, engaging activities where they can see their ideas become new innovations. But working with others can be difficult when not everyone agrees, listens, or cooperates.
This year my intention is for each student excel academically, but also to increase their emotional intelligence. By building a strong classroom community, my students are encouraged to take risks and embrace diversity.
My Project
By using picture books to teach social-emotional skills, my students will be able to analyze how the characters in the stories deal with a variety of social situations. Sometimes it is too difficult for students to look inwardly at such a young age, so using literature can be a great way to discuss these essential life skills in a classroom setting.
Picture books that deal with social-emotional learning can spark meaningful conversations.
By beginning the school year reading these types of books, I will be able to create a community of learners that can support each other academically, emotionally, and socially. Students will hopefully take what they learned while analyzing the characters in the story to help them navigate their own social situations.
