Learning Self- Esteem Through Music

My students need their own recorders, ukuleles, and drums to hold on to. Every child should have an instrument in their hands; no one should have to sit on the sideline!

My Students

My students are bright, caring, and motivated. When they come through that door in the morning with their huge smiles, you would never expect that most of them have suffered through unimaginable hardships. Almost 80% of our population qualify for free and reduced lunch programs; many cannot speak English yet, are refugees, or are dealing with poverty.

If I could make them believe one thing, it would be "you ARE worth it!" You ARE able to do whatever you want to in life.

You just have to believe in yourself and work hard!

My Project

I have requested recorders for my 4th and 5th graders, enough ukuleles to make a class set (we already fund-raised enough for 16!), gig bags to protect those instruments, and a drum kit (because I have big dreams for these kids!).

My students learn best when they are shown music that they enjoy and can relate to!

I think these resources can give them that opportunity. If I were to have a whole class set of ukuleles, I could expand the program from just an after-school activity to an entire unit of learning! Everyone would be able to learn and play songs that they know and even start composing songs themselves!
