Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach general science at a Juvenile Detention Center. I have over three hundred students coming in and out of the facility every year. My classes are a mix of seventh to twelfth grade students. Maintaining education is important for these students and I really try to incorporate fun and interesting activities to pique their interest in science. They love to draw and create art pieces based on what they have learned in class. Because they are in a high-stress environment, drawing and creating art pieces is a great way for them to relax, but also learn at the same time.
My students are creative, artistic scientists who all have their own way of learning and improving themselves.
They are mostly hands-on and visual learners. I would like to incorporate more hands-on learning activities for them.
My Project
My students come into the classroom without supplies because of safety concerns in the facility. My school only provides paper and yellow pencils for the students. It would be a great help to supply all of my students with the supplies they need to have a normal classroom. My goal is to have a conventional science classroom just like the ones they would have outside of the facility, so that they can forget, momentarily, that they are in a stressful environment.
My students love to design and I want to encourage them to constantly express their creativity.
Having a classroom filled with seventh through twelfth graders, it can be difficult to create lessons that address the unique needs of all my students. However, most of them are visual learners who love to incorporate art into their learning. Using art is a great way for my students to not only learn the material, but also de-stress and calm down. Thus, I would like to get more colorful art supplies such as colored pencils, markers and paper for students to use for their art projects. I also plan on designing bulletin boards to display student work, student achievements, science novels and student word search competitions. My students feel a great sense of pride and it boosts their morale when they see their art pieces or their name on the bulletin board. Because there are a lot of restrictions in the facility, the stickers are used as fun incentives to encourage students to continue their participation and achievement in class. We really appreciate the support to create the colorful, creative classroom we dream of.
