My Students

Do you remember what your favorite subject was to learn about in school? For me it was science. The same is true today in my life as a teacher. Please help my classroom purchase non-fiction science books and a working document camera so that I can open up a new world for my students.

I am the teacher of 23 energetic first graders in Utah.

My class consists of 15 boys and only 8 girls. My class is full of great readers and writers who absolutely love reading and writing about science topics including weather, plants, water, animal classification and habitats.

My Project

My first grade students absolutely love reading and writing. I have found that what their favorite type of book to read is non-fiction, namely science books. They love to read books about animals and their homes, types of weather (especially tornadoes and hurricanes), plants and the moon. The books I am requesting are all non-fiction books that I will be able to read to my students, using a working document camera, to help them get a better understanding of many science topics. My students will also be able to also read these on their own or with a buddy. Non-fiction books have vivid pictures that embed the subjects and ideas into the students minds. A working document camera will enable my students to see in great clarity the science experiments I am performing. With this great monetary donation I will be able to purchase non-fiction science books and a working document camera for my first grade classroom.

Science is such an important, but mostly forgotten subject in today's schools.

For the most part, us as teachers, are asked to focus on mathematics and language arts. I feel as though science is just as important as math and language arts. Using a document camera to teach science topics is a must! Please help me reinforce science topics for my first graders by helping me purchase non-fiction science books, as well as a document camera, for my classroom.
