Learning Problem-Solving Skills Through Play!

My Project

As a special educator, all of my students are working on very different goals. Each student focuses on their reading, math, and writing goals. Unfortunately, we don't always have time to help build their problem-solving skills. There are many times when learning can feel hard for my students, and it's my goal to not only help them learn curriculum, but to help them build their confidence in the classroom.

Problem solving can be hard for many of my students, so using puzzles and play to help build those skills can make it a positive experience while building relationships with my students.

Before I can use the tools, I will need a place to store them that will be organized and easily accessible for my students. So the containers and labels will help to keep all of our learning tools organized. Many times the students I work with struggle with executive functioning and making a plan before taking action.

Using LEGOs and other building tools will help my students plan and be flexible with their thinking if things don't go as planned. The puzzles and brain teasers are a way to practice patience and problem-solving. If a specific piece doesn't fit the first time, my students will need to pause, think and try another strategy. The hope is that through these hands-on practices, my students will begin to transfer these strategies in their general education settings.

My plan is to use the sensory tools with my students who struggle with their emotions. Problem-solving can also be a concern in the classroom when a student becomes heightened and can be aggressive and disruptive. I can utilize these tools to help work on calming strategies when things don't go how they planned it to.
