My Students
I recently got rid of a very old carpet that was in my classroom for years. It can no longer be used because of the filth that has been caked into it. This year, I want my students to have a clean and brand new magic carpet where they can sit comfortably as they learn.
My students come from a very diverse group of families and backgrounds.
One thing that they do have in common is that they are all very eager to learn and use their wildest imaginations! We started off the year without a rug on the floor, but my students were still able to "pretend" that there was a "magic rug" when we did calendar activities, story-time, and mini-lessons. A few weeks after, a carpet was donated by a faculty member, but the size does not accommodate for all students. Some of them say that they're "falling off the magic carpet."
I work in a very close-knit community, where family members are always eager to help teachers at our school. Some parents have suggested to take up a collection for a brand new rug. They are willing to help, and I thought Donorschoose is a great avenue for them to make donations! I am hoping for our "magic carpet" to get funded so that all of my students can take off with us!
My Project
A new "magic carpet" is essential for learning in a 2nd-grade classroom such as mine because we use it often for morning and calendar activities. We also use it for story-time, where my students actively engage in listening to various stories each week. This is when they use their listening, visualization, and discussion skills.
Gathering them to the "magic carpet" also engages them better when I do my lessons because they are in a closer proximity to me and have little room for fooling around! On the "magic carpet," my students are better in listening and using their imaginations, which is necessary for learning.
My students want to take a trip on a brand new "magic carpet" without leaving anyone behind!
This is where they are on for most of the day, so I want their "bottoms" to be as comfortable as possible. A fresh new carpet makes a comfortable child, a comfortable child learns more, and a child who learns more makes one happy teacher!
