Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If there is one basic skill everyone needs in this world is to know how to count money! Young students need to recognize the coins, figure out a price, give or check their change... This is pretty difficult if you don't have the money in your hand and try to work it out just looking at pictures in a book. The kids need activities that would allow them to learn efficiently, activities that offer an almost real-life environment.
Unfortunately, my school is a title I LAUSD with minimum funding and can't afford anymore supplies for teachers. Most of our students come from economically disadvantaged families and parents can't cover the cost. Usually, African American students make up about 70% of my second grade class and Latino children about 20%. We are teaching respect, tolerance, and teamwork. Our students are aware of the issues awaiting them and they are getting ready!
The plastic money collection would allow students to hold the coins and bills, count, and create different ways to show the same amount. With the "Allowance" game, they would be able to practice their math skills with a motivating activity that simulates real-life situations; they work, save, give change, sometimes lose money... The puzzle money would help struggling students in matching amounts with the smallest number of coins. These three level supplies I selected would address all students' needs and support them in mastering money step by step. Your generous gift would not only help them pass their tests successfully, but you would provide them with essential life experiences! I thank you in advance for your support in keeping math education exciting and grounded in reality!
