Learning Money Skills Through a Classroom Store

My Project

My students are highly motivated by earning bucks. They currently earn bucks by meeting our three class goals which are being respectful to teachers and staff, using a positive attitude when working on challenging things, and staying focused on classwork and using time wisely. They are able to earn up to five dollars per small group. With the money they have earned throughout the week, they are able to spend in the classroom store on Friday once a month.

The classroom store has been very useful for my students in learning real life skills such as saving money, earning money, exchanging money, and counting money.

The bills in our classroom are called lion bucks (our school mascot) and mimic real life money with 1's, 5's, 10's, 20's, 50's, and 100's. With the class store students have really taken ownership of learning all of these needed money skills to spend or save their money on items they want.

The items in this project are a large variety of stickers and other highly desired items that students will be interested in spending their money on. Students are expected to keep their own money in their envelope and are expected to count their money up before spending their money. Students are encouraged and taught to trade up their bills if they have five ones for a five, or four fives for a twenty, etc. Students also calculate how much change they should receive when they spend their money to enhance learning opportunities, even more, to learn important money skills to use in life.
