Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Working at a Title I school, each one of my students receives free breakfast and lunch. As a school that serves nearly 1,000 students, my students come from a variety of family dynamics, races, backgrounds, and cultures. With a thirst for knowledge and eagerness in their eyes, my students always want to learn as much as they can. Each one of my students demonstrates not only a joy for learning, but a passion to become someone who they are proud to be.

Many of my students do not have the ability at home or in their own community to access books and other resources to help them throughout their journey into being successful individuals.

My role as an educator is not only to continue the spark for their learning but to provide them with every opportunity to succeed. One of the biggest areas in which my students will achieve success is through reading. Each with their own longing for learning, getting their hands on as different resources is my number one mission. For many of my students, our classroom is our home and one of the safest places they have.

My Project

This project was created to help my students better understand the basic math concepts that many kindergarteners struggle with daily. Learning math is difficult, but learning math in your first year of school can be intimidating, confusing, and scary. Many of my students have never been in school and are still learning the basics of everyday school life. During this time, trying to learn a subject like mathematics can give students anxiety. Using the right tools can truly make a difference in the learning.

With ETA hand2mind Daily Math Fluency, I will be able to help my students gain a better understanding of math and enjoy learning a new subject that will last forever.

Students will be able to get more out of their lesson during their math block. They will get the opportunity to dive right into learning using the numerous tools and manipulatives that this kit provides. This kit includes manipulatives that help students with adding on, using five and ten frames, and counting strings. Students will use the Bead Demonstration Rekenrek to help gain a better understanding of using doubles, counting items, and using motor skills to move manipulatives in counting, adding, and subtracting. This kit also includes number strings in which students can practice 5 problems daily in the morning math warm-up and during their centers to practice skills learned during lessons.

This kit also include numerous practice problems, math talks, and a teachers guide with numerous strategies for teaching numerous mathematical concepts. Not only does this kit provide numerous opportunities for my students to be more hands on with their learning, but it will also help me as a teacher to guide my students into a more comfortable and exciting way of learning math.
