it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the pleasure of being the math teacher for all 5th graders at a Title I school in South Florida where 80% of our students are learning English as a second language. Our kids typically have something of a phobia of math, and they find the subject difficult to master. Unfortunately, their comprehension can often be several years below grade level. To try to remedy this, I use technology as often as possible in my classroom to make learning math engaging and fun!
My Project
In my classroom, I use Khan Academy to supplement our textbook whenever possible. Khan Academy is a fun online program that simplifies math for students while still holding them to a high standard of academic rigor. My students like that it lets them build their knowledge up gradually until they reach grade-level comprehension. As a teacher, I love that it also builds students’ confidence while it brings them up to grade level. Best of all, Khan Academy is available in English and Spanish, which makes a world of difference to our ESOL students as they slowly adjust to their English-language schooling.
Using Khan Academy has helped my students achieve tremendous growth on their standardized assessments and completely changed their math self-esteem.
Unfortunately, a lack of access to Chromebooks at our school prevents them from having the access to this excellent learning resource that they need and deserve. These Chromebooks will solve that problem by giving more of my kids the opportunity to benefit from using this program!
