This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

First and foremost I would like to thank you for your consideration in providing opportunities to an underserved community to learn physics and math in a unique expeditionary learning curriculum. The curriculum we are developing here at our school is to assist the math and science literacy for every student and promote future career outcomes that most students wouldn't even dream to explore. Part of the expeditionary learning process is to use a contextualized approach on science and math so students can formulate observations, interrupt real data, and draw conclusions hands-on. Studies have shown that expeditionary learning raises math and science scores, teaches critical thinking, analytical problem solving, and most importantly an understanding of their world. In order for our students to participate in an evidence based learning style is to provide them with proper equipment and resources to adequately create these outcomes.

The first large-scale expeditionary learning curriculum we will introduce is rocket science, where students will research, design, create, and test bottle rockets to determine the best aerodynamic launch and safe return using mathematics.

We will utilize the bottle rocket launcher every semester reaching an average of 75-90 students in a classroom setting, as well as after school programs for further exploration. We would like to encourage continued education and expand future opportunities for our students. Having a strong physics and space science section in our curriculum will help encourage our students to transfer to our state university which has an amazing program in these subjects. Our goal is to create meaningful hands-on science experiences that enhance the love of science and math in our community!
