Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm SO lucky... and my kids remind me of it daily! I'm the guy who gets to pay it forward with 30+ inner-Santa Rosa City kids that love to come to school everyday to learn about the world, themselves, and other people. I'm about to start my 23rd year teaching 5th/6th grade at Luther Burbank Elementary (the oldest school in Santa Rosa).
Our school is located in downtown Santa Rosa.
We're a Title I school, with a SED (Socially Economically Disadvantaged) population that fluctuates year to year between 89-93%. Burbank is a small school with roughly 340 students, K-6. We are 65% second language learner, 90% Latino, 5% Asian/Other, 5% White. We are one of 13 elementary schools in the Santa Rosa City Schools District.
When I began teaching here, many of our demographics were the same, but with a higher designated English language learner population and lower test scores. Year after year we've vastly improved academically and more students than ever have been re-designated English Proficient. Our staff of 18 teachers, students and families make this school such a happy positive place to be.
I love going to work everyday.
My Project
My students will be starting learning at home this fall, with a continued Distant Learning model due to COVID-19. The majority of my students come from low socio-economic families with many of their parents working in the "essential worker" categories. I'm planning on combining existing supplies in my classroom with these added materials so that my students can be set up for success and ready to learn right from the get go.
These learning material "care kits" will greatly help support math, writing and community building activities I'm planning for the first trimester.
