I will be teaching a 5/6th grade combo this year, where I will be assigning different novels for each grade level. I have a variety of 6th grade selections but am lacking selections for my 5th graders. I would like to add more multicultural titles into my cue so my 5th grade students, who will be my 6th graders next year, don't have repetition with novels and equally have a list of newer titles and diverse stories to read for this year. Exposing readers to characters and narratives that are more representative of our entire community, building understanding, empowerment and inspiration is crucial to building a stronger more inclusive society where children of all backgrounds can feel represented and valued. Literature is magical and intimate in the ways it can engage readers, create valuable conversations, expand curiosity and support meaningful writing. The virus may be stopping us from teaching and learning in person... but it won't stop us from having rich discussions about writing, narratives that develop a love for reading and self, and expand understanding and empathy for stories that are not our own.
