My Students

My students with special needs require materials that will help them participate with nondisabled peers.

My students attend an inclusive preschool setting in a low income school.

They have special needs including autism and developmental delays. They share a classroom with peers who are not disabled, but they need some extra supports to help them fully participate in activities. For example, students who are nonverbal can point to pictures to request something or to answer a question. Color ink for our printer and laminating sheets will allow for the creation of individualized materials such as picture schedules and other visual supports.

My Project

When I ask my preschool students - "what do you like to eat?" a student who is nonverbal might not be able to participate. But with pictures, he will be able to point to a picture of his or her favorite food when presented with a "choice board" showing pictures of common foods. Then I can say, "Marcus (not a real name) likes to eat ice cream!" just like I said what the other children ate when they answered my question verbally. At mealtimes, a student who is nonverbal can point to pictures of juice, milk, cereal, etc. to request those items.

Teaching students with special needs to communicate is one of the most important things I can do as an educator.

By learning to communicate their wants and needs and answer questions, my students are able to participate with their non-disabled peers in a meaningful way.
