My Project
In early childhood education, a focus on life skills and socioemotional learning is a crucial step in supporting a young child's growth. Some examples of these socioemotional concepts include empathy, emotional regulation, problem-solving, critical thinking, inclusivity, kindness, and much more.
By taking the time to teach these life skills, we can help young children grow into empathetic community members who understand their own emotions as well as the emotions of others.
Furthermore, my class is a blended Pre-K class which consists of some students with special needs alongside typically developing peers. Inclusion is a core value of our classroom and it is essential that my students understand that everyone is unique and learns in their own way. Books such as, "It's Okay to Be Different" by Todd Parr and "Franklin's New Friend" by Paulette Bourgeois will help to reinforce this concept.
Another essential skill that will be taught using these books is emotional regulation. Books that will support this include, "How Do Dinosaurs Stay Safe?" by Jane Yolen, "When Sophie Gets Angry - Really, Really Angry…" by Molly Bang, and "Lots of Feelings" by Shelly Rotner. The Post-It Easel Pad will be used to create anchor charts that support and reinforce learning after reading the stories. These stories will be an amazing resource to teach socioemotional and life skills to my Pre-K students!
