It has been a year since Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on our city. Some of my students were severely impacted. All have certainly been affected psychologically.
Our classroom is meant to be a place for love, warmth, growth, and achievement in both academics and social skills.
My students are a bright group of early childhood learners fortunate enough to be growing their literacy, STEAM, and social skills through the Tools of the Mind curriculum.
My students are among the youngest children in our school.
They are full of fun, excitement, and determination. Most of the students are raised in at risk low income homes. For many, school is a constant they can count on day in and day out. Many of my students are English Language Learners. As little ones, their world is mostly about what they can see, hear, touch, and even relate to.
My Project
The literacy resources that are being requested will provide pictorial and literacy support to help my students thrive in various purposeful play stations such as a bakery, produce stand, pizza restaurant, and many others.
Hurricane Harvey may have changed my students, but the resilience of children is truly remarkable.
These resources will further solidify recovery and a return to normalcy from the natural disaster by giving the early childhood learners ideas, information, and opportunities to practice real life scenarios they will encounter.
My students need books that help them to understand complex concepts they are not able to fully understand quite yet. The illustrations and text from these ninety+ books will allow them to practice situations adults experience For example the well practice ordering items from a bakery, using chopsticks to eat sushi, flipping pancakes, visiting a farmers market, selecting the toppings on their favorite pizza, and even building a healthy salad.
Purposeful Play is supported by many early childhood experts and scholars. It allows for children to be creative while working through complex situations. The students love it and are learning multiple skills even adults encounter.
