Learning Life Skills Through Coding

My students need a Fire Tablet and Future Coders Bunny Trails STEM Activity to learn about coding.

My Students

I teach technology to grades Kindergarten through third grade in a Title I school in Brooklyn, New York. Many of my students are from families that fall below the poverty line. I have students of varying levels, special needs, and languages all in the technology lab at the same time.

Many of my students do not have access to technology at home so when they come to the technology lab they are excited and eager to learn and get to work.

My students are bright, cheerful, loving, excited, and and eager to learn.

My Project

At any one time in the technology lab I can have students of different ages, academic levels, learning styles, English language learners, special need learners but the one thing they all have in common a love of coding. The coding area of the technology lab is very popular with my kiddos which as a teacher is a win for me.

While my kiddos think they are just "playing" they are actually learning and practice important skills such as problem solving, cause and effect, sequencing, listening and speaking skills since they are working in small groups all the skills they will need as adults.

We already have a Dash and a Dot Robot in the technology lab but at this time we only have 1 Fire Tablet; the addition of another Fire Tablet will mean more students can use the robots at the same time.

The Future Coders Bunny Trails STEM Activity is the perfect fit for my beginner coders. They start out following the pre-made coding cards to program the bunny robot through the maze. As their coding skills advance they can create their own mazes and coding cards for other students to program the bunny robot through the maze.
