Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are faced with challenges every day as a result of their disabilities. Independent life skills don't always come naturally for them, but my students are always eager to learn and participate! By having a mini fridge and cooking utensils, my students will be able to practice cooking skills and kitchen safety needed to become more independent adults.
My students are are 6th-8th graders with moderate/severe autism with the biggest hearts, and they all have an even bigger desire to learn!
They learn best from visuals, real-world experiences, and lessons that are interactive. Our middle school is located in a very low-income area, and we have very limited resources given to us, but that does not stop us from learning and having fun!
My Project
In my classroom, we cook at least once a week. The students choose what they want to cook, look at the recipe, come up with a shopping list and make the food by following the recipe. Cooking is one of my students' favorite activities of the week! We often buy the ingredients before the day we need them, so we need a mini fridge to store the perishable items.
Teaching my students life skills is a very important part of my job.
During cooking lessons, I focus on teaching them how to follow a recipe, measuring ingredients, and kitchen safety.
