Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a co-taught special education prek classroom that consists of 42 3 year old students. Half of the students in the class have special needs while all of them come from very low income families. They all have diverse backgrounds including family structure and the different languages spoken. What they do have in common is that when they enter my classroom, I am their very first teacher and this school year will be there first ever school experience.

My students are loving, energetic, insightful, and inquisitive; they are our future mathematicians, scientists, gardeners, and doctors; unfortunately, they come to me without a voice of their own.

With the diverse language backgrounds, a majority of the students are in various stages of learning how to speak. Many are non-verbal while others are able to identify a few common things from home.

When I think about my classroom and students I have each and every year, I call them my children than my students. They become my family and I treat them with the loving care they need.

My Project

My students love to play, so why not allow them to! The variety of materials I have chosen will allow the students to incorporate the use of matching pictures with the like items to matching without the aid of pictures. These activities will also allow the students to use multiple senses while learning language and vocabulary. The students can play with a small, 3D models of the items while they learn.

I love being able to create to aid in my students learning and their understanding of different topics and with the wide range of developmental levels, it is difficult to find books and stories that not only keep my students attention but also teach them new vocabulary.

The paper, computer ink, velcro, and laminate paper will give me the freedom to create developmentally appropriate, ling lasting, interactive story books to introduce and extend their learning.

My most favorite item is the vocabulary game for the classroom computers. The students will be able to incorporate their new found vocabulary knowledge with technology by guiding their characters through a variety of puzzles to decipher different vocabulary words.
