Learning Language with Computers

My students need a charge station and 8 Chromebooks in order to access resources to support their learning of the Arabic language and culture.

My Students

Learning a foreign language opens the minds of students to new experiences, cultures and perspectives. This happens every day in my classroom as my students engage in the challenging task of learning Arabic as a foreign language.

At our inner-city high school serving a low-income student population, we only offer the study of two complex foreign languages-Chinese and Arabic.

It is amazing to witness how many of my students have taken on the challenging task of learning Arabic and are always looking for resources to further their knowledge of the language, improve communication and use the language in worthwhile, engaging, and authentic ways.

My Project

The addition of this technology to my foreign language classroom will make a huge impact on student learning. Students will use these resources to access innovative platforms focused on language learning that will enable them to read, write, and speak in Arabic.

Currently, we do not have computers available for students on a daily basis.

This impacts their learning and they are unable to complete projects in a timely manner. I am requesting 10 Samsung Chromebooks to keep in my classroom for daily use on our projects and enhance learning.

With the addition of this technology, my Arabic students will be able to share their learning with others around the world. Each year, my classes partner with language classrooms in places like Morocco, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan in order to engage in authentic speaking activities and opportunities. We also take part in web-based activities focused on integrating the learning of Arabic language and culture with the arts. The technology will also be used in order to access Google classroom's various forms of Arabic literacy assessments, and to conduct video conferences. These authentic learning opportunities enable students to put their learning into practice.
