My students are 2nd graders learning in a dual language classroom in Queens, NY. Approximately half of my students are native English speakers, while the other half are native Spanish speakers. Many of my students are English Language Learners. Our program is extremely diverse, and every child is eligible for free lunch.
These children come to school ready to learn, with the language of instruction alternating between English and Spanish each day.
They are eager readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and leaders, who are becoming equipped to achieve academic and social success in today's global community.
My Project
Second graders love to sing and dance! The wireless bluetooth speaker will allow students to listen and sing along to music in both English and Spanish. When learning a new language, it is especially important to hear that language being used correctly. With this speaker, my students will be able to hear the lyrics to different songs as they read/sing along, thus improving their linguistic ability and confidence as bilingual learners.
The speaker will also help to develop students' cultural awareness through exposure to different genres of music from around the world.
They will get to hear traditional songs from the different Latin American countries we study, as well as be able to share songs that are important to themselves or their families.
The bluetooth features of the UE Boom allow it to be used with multiple devices in the classroom, whether a handheld smartphone, laptop computer, or our SmartBoard. Finally, its portability will allow us to use the speaker throughout the classroom as well as outdoors, in the gym, or in the auditorium -- making it an excellent tool for a variety of projects.
