I work in a title one school in Sunset Park Brooklyn. I teach first grade to 19 English language learners. My students learn the English Language as they learn to read and write. It is an amazing process to watch my students listen to language and then to use those new words to both speak and write their own ideas. I find that language flows most easily when my students are engaged in an activity. During art, because the focus is not on the language it seems to grow effortlessly. For this reason we have free choice center time where the children can just build and create freely. During this time many children sit at the art box and create books, pictures and sculptures using all sorts of art mediums. Most of the time the ideas and language are only limited by our supplies. As our "junk box" is emptying out again I would like to restock it. I would like to add beads, wiggly eyes, felt pieces, feather and foam. As the children work with these inviting materials from Lakeshore and Oriental Trading they use the language to talk about size, color, shape, texture as well as describe their final creations. I believe that learning language through hands on fun is a wonderful learning experience.
