My Project

Hello, my name is Kathleen Moore and my amazing students are multilingual students in the second grade. I teach at a Title One school in the city of Lowell, MA. All of my students are learning the multitudes of the English language as a second language while simultaneously learning all of the second-grade content. This, obviously, puts them at a distinct disadvantage as the content is all taught in the English language--which many of them are still struggling to understand.

Through hands on learning and games I hope to greatly improve the social-emotional aspect of their learning and advance their progress.

Many studies of the learning qualities of EL/ML students have shown that manipulatives ang regalia are a key learning requirement that they all share. Hands on learning is imperative to their individual learning needs. If that hands-on learning is through games it can greatly increase the likelihood of retention and attention. Students are far more capable of engaging with a game they enjoy that also teaches them graphemes and phonemes than that of a standard lecture and worksheet lesson.

Thusly, dear doners, I am asking for your kindness and generosity with engaging in this project. The school year may be coming to a close; however, we have the summer program and next school year to contend with. Learning never ceases when you are dedicated to what you teach and to your students. I thank you for your time and for all of your grace.
