Learning Labs in Kindergarten: Supporting Academic and Social-Emotional Growth

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the resources available to, and the mental health of our communities.
We see its impact on the social-emotional and academic development of our young Kindergarten students in our classroom, and across the country. In hopes of providing a strong foundation of functional/practical, academic, and social-emotional skills, I would like to (with your help,) implement Learning Labs into my classroom.
In Learning Labs, Kindergarten students can gain foundational, functional, and practical skills through play and exploration. Students will engage in Learning Labs such as Housekeeping, Doctor’s Office, Library, Free Writing, Science and Sensory, and much more. Additional materials are necessary to make these Learning Labs effective for increasing academic skills, functional for gaining practical and social-emotional skills, and most importantly, learning in appropriate, engaging, and fun ways: a play kitchen with accessories, medical supplies, and other exploratory lab-based tools such as magnetic tiles.
The transition from preschool (or no school) to Kindergarten can be challenging. We are confident that Learning Labs may help to ease students into their new learning environments (which come with new expectations and learning goals), introduce academic concepts in developmentally appropriate ways, and make our classroom a fun place of exploration, wonder, and play.
