I've been so lucky to provide my second grade enrichment students with a few enriched art lesson thanks to donorschoose.org and long list of wonderful donors. My students' reactions and questioning has motivated me to continue researching and creating projects that incorporate a variety of subjects!
My second grade enrichment students are bored.
They have a hunger for projects that engage them entirely. They want to do projects that make them excited. They have asked, "When are we doing another art history project?" They have said, "Let's learn about another famous artist!" They love hands-on projects that connect to art, as well as projects that show charted progress. This group of kids keeps me researching and learning new ways to teach.
Our school has eliminated an Art instructor, which saddens me for my students. This specific group of learners are so eager to learn about the "whys" and "hows" that can so easily be connected with the use of art. These kids need to express themselves... so why not doing so while learning?
My Project
I envision my students using a sewing machine and material to complete a patterning and fractions unit. Students will understand how technology, the sewing machine, has simplified the art of creating things.
We will create our own patterns during a lesson on measurement. Next, we will discuss patterns and repetition. Then we will discuss fractions when creating quilt blocks. Lastly, each student will create a 10x10 quilt block and we will sew them together to create a class quilt.
This proposed project will assist me in teaching important learning objectives, but also teamwork and life skills.
The sewing machine will then be a fixture in my classroom for years to come, so that I can educate many more students to concepts in this way.
