This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom involves 30 minute sessions with 1 to 3 students who come for speech and language therapy. I have 37 students on my class load. I strive to motivate my students to learn in new and creative ways each day but still, they come in and ask "can we play a game today?"
My caseload of students are from Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
My students mostly live in either a shelter or in a housing development and a high percentage of them receive free lunch and breakfast from the school. Most of my students are in special education classes (12:1:1) or ICT (an integrated class). My students require visuals and other materials to motivate them to learn.
My Project
When students are having a good time, they are more likely to learn and retain information. Children love coming to speech and language therapy because they know they are going to have fun while learning. The listed games teach students how to answer questions, will enhance their vocabulary (i.e.: synonyms, antonyms, multiple meaning words), increase social skills (i.e.: turn taking), and allow them to formulate stories and personal narratives to help inform listeners of important events. The requested games, such as Main Idea Bingo and Reading Comprehension, facilitate all of these skills and will aid my students in acquiring the necessary skills to access the curriculum in a fun and memorable way.
This is my second year teaching and I have not yet built a high yield of materials like many of my seasoned colleagues.
My school and district has a low budget and I am required to buy materials using my own funds. Your donation will help build the available supplies to aid my students access the curriculum and enhance their drive to want to learn. These materials will be used well and often.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
