Learning is Much More FUN with Learning Tools: Part 2!!!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello generous donors! I teach 20 of the most fantastic third grade students at Slonaker Academy, a public community-based school in East San Jose in the Alum Rock School District. Slonaker is a school full of wonderful students who face many challenges, including low socio-economics, language barriers, and low performance. Please help me to help these wonderful third grade students to have fun and exciting hands-on learning activities and tools without having to leave the classroom. Please help us build and update our collection of hands-on learning activities and tools for all subjects. In addition, these activities will not only benefit my current students but also future students for years to come. I am requesting hands-on learning manipulatives, books, and center activities that will engage, challenge, and reinforce students in language arts, math, science, social studies, and much more. These activities will provide endless hours of fun and exciting learning. The creative and colorful games (which will assist in vocabulary development) will be especially beneficial to the second language learners. Students for years to come will learn multiple subjects by using enjoyable activities that will fit into our challenging curriculum. My goal is to engage my students in what they are learning so they can learn to love education and become lifetime learners. Hopefully, they will pass on their love for learning to others! Achieving this goal can be very difficult at times due to tight budgets, limited resources, and scripted curriculum. In addition, 90% of my students are second language learners, so I have to spend a great deal of my teaching time working on language development and math. The use of learning games and activities is very beneficial to struggling students. Many of the students at Slonaker come from very poor families. These families work very long and hard hours just to provide life's basic necessities (many of which most people take for granted). For most students, their only opportunity for seeing new places and learning about new things is at school. Due to state budget cutbacks, teachers are not given the funds needed to fund fieldtrips, hands-on manipulatives, and other fun learning activities and tools. Unfortunately, at our school, neither are the parents able to fund these activities. So, that is why I ask you for some help. Thank you for your time and consideration!
