This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As I reach mid-year, I can't help but look back and see how amazing and motivated my students are and how far they have come since the beginning of the year. I am a Special Ed Bilingual-Yiddish teacher for 5-year-old boys with Down syndrome.
We started the year off with an amazing reading program created by Natalie Hale, specifically geared to teach students with Down syndrome how to read.
My students are soaring through reading! My staff and I are constantly creating fun and exciting books for our students and they love the books. We have already created family books, the Curious George series, the Clifford series, etc. We create these books on special card stock paper which is then bound. It is pricey but worth every penny! Some students already know over 60 sight words. We expanded our book-making and started creating sight word lotto games and opened a library for all the books that the students mastered. During free play, my boys go straight to the library and love reading in their free time. This brings me pure joy!
We have a small classroom and we try to make it as cozy as possible given the small space. To do so, we can use 2 rugs for the math and play center. We are constantly creating projects/crafts as an extension to our lessons. Therefore, we run low on basic supplies like wipes, paper towels, glue, and markers as we need these items in abundance.
In summary, I would love to help keep a warm and friendly classroom environment where my students are excited to keep learning and expanding their knowledge.
