Learning Independent Living Skills in the Classroom-Part 2!
Help me give my students the responsibility to take care of their own classroom studio apartment! This last piece is the missing link to putting our classroom altogether!
Hello! I work at a school for exceptional children, the ages of our students range from 5-21. I am very excited to open up a brand new classroom for students who are 18-21 years of age.
This new classroom will teach the life skills that the students need to be independent after graduation and be contributing members in society.
My vision for this new room is to have it set up as a studio apartment. I want the students to be able to make a bed, set a table, and have a comfortable space to relax after they finish their work. The students will be in the community often having internships with local businesses who will teach them what it is like to work with an employer. The students will also closely with job coaches, a travel trainer, and a transition coordinator.
In this class, the student's goals will be to learn domestic living skills such as grocery shopping, cooking simple and healthy meals, budget income, household maintenance and time management are just to name a few!
My Project
This NEW program is embedded in the community and provides supplemental pre-employment and independent living skills. Students will focus on three domains of transition: post-secondary education, employment and independent living. This project will bring the independent and domestic living skills to a vibrant reality.
This is a brand new classroom and will need to be built from the bottom up- We are almost there!
This is phase two of my entire project! The first phase focused on the living and dining area of the classroom. This last phase is to focus on taking care of the bedroom. Students will learn how to make a bed, wash bedding and how to appropriately fold bedding when not in use.
Hopefully, everyone of us has a bed. It is important to know that by making your bedroom tidy and organized, it makes coming home from a long days work so much more rewarding and relaxing! This is the missing link to our studio apartment classroom!
