This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have learned that students' brains work in full effect when they feel like they are safe and welcomed! This can be a challenge for a special education teacher in the general education classroom because there are obstacles we face on a daily when it comes to our students with special needs. My students are learning about personal space and self-management skills that are necessary for being attentive and focused during whole group instruction when seated on the carpet.

When students are on the carpet, there are no markers to show designated areas.

For my special education I have blue tape on the carpet to mark their space. The problem is that it becomes a distraction when students pull it off or fidget with it, and it becomes a hassle to replace the tape. With a classroom carpet that has lines for each student, this will help my all students to understand boundaries on the carpet.

Special needs students who are in the general education classroom alongside their non-disabled peers need lots of visuals and sensory needs to be successful. I prefer laminating all visual schedules, reminders, and positive phrases so that they are safe from any damage harm. When students are experiencing anxiety, or overstimulation, visuals in their calm down area helps them to follow along with strategies that are posted on the wall. These visual reminders are helpful when students are able to read and comprehend what they read. However, most of my special needs students are unable to read, so the robot puppy will be used for calming down overstimulated students.

The laptop tray will be used in the calm down area that students can use to play or work with. The bubble pop learner can be used as a hands on toy for beginning readers.
