Do you remember what it was like the first time you went to the beach and felt and sand and built a sand castle? My students have not had the opportunity to do this because their is no beach near by and their is no sand and toys for our sand table.
My students are 20 of the most amazing 4 year olds that I have ever met.
Many of them have gone through more in their young lives then I have in my 25 years. 90% of my students live in a single family home and rarely have contact with their other parent. They attend one of the toughest schools in DC and live in a neighborhood where street shootings are a regular occurrence. They come to a school that is under funded and has no walls. They have shelves and cabinets separating their room from the other 3 that are in their area.
My Project
With these materials my students will be able to enjoy their sand table and experience what it is like to put their hands into sand. They will be able to sort through the sand and look for letters and numbers that will help them develop early math and literacy skills that they will need throughout their lives. They will also learn to interact with peers and share materials while they are at the sand table. With sand in the sand table, students will be able to use it daily and use their creativity and imagination to build things and explore how to make things.
This donation will make a difference because it will give 20 intercity kids, who have never had the opportunity to go to the beach and play in the sand to experience it in their classroom.
They will be able to make a sand castle and use their imagination to build themselves a future. Please help my students experience the joy of being able to play in the sand, build, find things and build things during the day, but most importantly build a future.
