Learning in the Outdoors!

My students need 3 rainwater collection barrels to help them water the gardens in our outdoor classroom.

My Students

My class loves to be outside! They are active and need to move to sustain focus. We move our lessons outdoors as much as possible to give the students much needed hands-on, real life experiences to attach to their learning.

My students come from a very low socio-economic area.

Many of my students are over weight or have family members that are over weight or struggling with diabetes. 71% of my students are Native American. Native Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This is why are gardening program in our outdoor classroom is so important. We spend the year, not only reviewing math, science and language skills through our garden, but also teaching our students how to grow and harvest their own healthy foods. The students are much more likely to try and continue eating healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables if they have had a part in growing them.

My Project

Right now our students carry buckets of water across our playground to water our garden. This takes a large mount of time and energy. We would love to teach our students to recycle and reuse rainwater to water our garden. The collection barrels will also cut our watering time down tremendously and leave more time to teach and utilize the rest of the outdoor classroom.

Our outdoor classroom and garden are very important parts of our curriculum.

Having water barrels to help decrease the amounts of time it will take us to water our garden is monumental. It will free up so much more time to care for and use our outdoor space for other teaching. It will also enable other grade levels to help with the chore.
