Cooking provides wonderful opportunities to help children learn mathematical and scientific concepts, new vocabulary, and socialization skills. Why not teach them while they are young, the values of cooking. Our class will learn them through this trip.
This year I am part of a teaching team.
We are teaching an inclusion class, which means our class is made up of both regular education students and special education students. They have learned this year to become a family. Helping each other when needed, laughing with each other and sharing with each other. As fifth graders they are in their last year of elementary school. They are transitioning into Middle School and becoming young adults.
Our school is located in New York City and students come from homes where both parents work. A home cooked family meal is not something these children have everyday.
My Project
Allowing our students to visit Young Chef's Academy will be more then just a class trip. It will be an amazing learning experience. This trip will be the culminating activity to our study of the Caribbean. The students will be cooking Banana Empanadas and Caribbean rice. They will also be reviewing the facts and information they learned about the Caribbean. This trip will also allow our students to learn how to cook. Cooking is an activity where children are allowed to do the same things that adults do. Cooking is fun and exciting. Our students will have the opportunity to explore food and to create something good to eat while they are cooking. They can try new things and learn how to live a healthy lifestyle.
In conclusion, cooking promotes social skills in children.
They learn to cooperate, share, and practice good manners. Children have a sense of pride and accomplishment by making and enjoying a finished product. Please support this trip and help to inspire our students to maybe one day become the next Top Chef or Ace of Cakes.
