This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am lucky enough to have a classroom of 27 amazing second graders. Second graders particularly have had a tough few years due to COVID, with their kindergarten year being cut short, and then an online year of first grade! Due to limited materials, it has been tough to get the hands on learning I strive for in my classroom. With more manipulatives and a flexible, and mobile whiteboard easel, my students will have more access to the material and it will encourage engagement.
Particularly the money unit was hard without enough play money for everyone.
An extra set will help tremendously! Students can physically touch coins, and see and feel their features.
The main focus of my project is accessibility, which has been limited due to COVID. I have to space my student's desks out to ensure safety, and that can make it difficult for visibility for several of my students, especially when I am using small magnetic letters up at the front. I have been dreaming of having a whiteboard easel this whole school year, and am so excited about that possibility. I can build words right in front of the kiddos.
I am also excited about continued organization in my classroom with bins and labels. This will speed up the process of getting materials, and will help with social distancing. Giving each child a water bottle will also be beneficial. It will allow them to have access to water right at their desk, rather than having to go to the fountain, and it helps with germs!
These resources are going to make little things in my classroom so much smoother, and allow for me to maximize our learning and prepare those kiddos for third grade. Thank you so much for this opportunity. I feel seen and heard as a teacher, and I could not be more grateful.
